What Are Cataracts?

A cataract is a clouding or discoloration of the natural lens inside the eye — not a tumor or growth. Cataracts occur naturally with age, or earlier in life due to injury, inflammation, certain diseases, smoking, or certain medications. Cataracts can cause significant problems with vision and make daily activities such as driving and reading more difficult.

Causes of Cataracts

  • Age
  • Diseases such as diabetes
  • Eye injuries
  • Inflammation
  • Smoking
  • Certain medications

Symptoms of Cataracts

  • Blurry or cloudy vision
  • Poor vision at night
  • Glare, starbursts, and halos around lights
  • Fading or yellowing of colors
  • Ghost images & double vision
  • Frequent changes in vision prescription

Is There a Permanent Solution to Cataracts?

Cataract surgery is the only way to permanently resolve cataracts.  Fortunately, cataract surgery is fast, pain free, and very safe.  It is generally performed as an outpatient procedure, using topical anesthesia and mild sedation; general anesthesia is rarely required. Your surgeon will remove the cloudy lens (cataract) and replace it with a clear, artificial lens called an intraocular lens or IOL. This lens is implanted inside the eye and is designed to stay in place for life: you’ll never have to worry about cataracts again.

There are many advanced technology IOL options available today which can not only improve vision, but also help you reduce or eliminate your dependence on eyewear!

When Should Cataracts Be Removed?

Your eye doctor can examine your cataracts and measure their effect on your vision, but the decision to proceed with surgery must ultimately be made by you. At some point, your vision impairment will interfere with your performance or enjoyment of normal daily activities: we generally recommend you move forward with the procedure before cataracts cause a significant reduction in normal activities, or a decline in your quality of life. And of course, you can decide not to have cataracts removed, though your vision loss will continue to worsen over time.

Advanced Technology IOLs

We know that our patients are diverse and have unique vision and lifestyle needs. That’s why we offer several IOL options to help you achieve your vision goals after cataract surgery. During your cataract evaluation, we’ll discuss all your lens options and help you decide which lens is best for your daily life.

  • Light Adjustable Lenses are the newest technology available to patients. Unlike other IOLs, the shape of these IOLs can be adjusted after they are implanted in the eye.  This allows patients to “test drive” and then fine tune their vision.  With adjustments patients can achieve the best possible outcome for each individual eye, and a significant reduction in the need for glasses for a wide range of activities.
  • Multifocal IOLs provide clear vision at multiple distances and can decrease or eliminate the need for glasses for a wide range of activities. Dr. Fillmore was the first in the Inland Northwest to implant one of the most advanced multifocal IOLs, the AcrySof® IQ PanOptix®
  • Toric Monofocal IOLs are uniquely designed for patients who have both cataracts and astigmatism. These lenses provide proper correction to reduce or eliminate astigmatism, which can’t be corrected by standard lenses, and can reduce or eliminate the need for glasses for certain activities.
  • Standard Monofocal IOLs restore vision for one area of focus, usually to see distant objects clearly. After these lenses are implanted, you may still need to wear prescription or reading glasses to achieve your sharpest vision.

Cost of Cataract Surgery

Cataract surgery costs will vary depending on your insurance, chosen IOL, and the surgical technique. At Eye Consultants, we’ve made our cataract surgery pricing as simple and transparent as possible, so you can be confident from the start about how much your treatment will cost.

Money should never stand in the way of better vision, which is why we offer several different financing options through CareCredit to help you realize the wonderful benefits of our advanced technology IOLs!

After years of vision problems that were not addressed it only took one eye exam for the doctor at Eye Consultants to make a diagnosis. I needed cataract surgery.
